“Choose quality connections over quantity connections.” — Allen Chilson
In an interactive online session of “Chat with Nish” on August 12, 2020, Allen Chilson, Talent Acquisition Manager - Strategic Partnerships at BASF, shared his thoughts about the importance of empathetic networking.
“Whether you are looking for a job or not, networking is important,” Allen said. “Networking has become more powerful than ever.”
According to Allen, networking is just not for not working; it’s about empathetic networking. Empathy comes from reaching out to people who are in need and offering them opportunities.
“Tell your story to people and visit places to build your network.” Allen further suggested taking a business development approach while networking. “Be your brand ambassador. The aim of networking is not to ask anybody for a job or a referral, but to introduce people to what you do and how you can be valuable to them.”
He said the networking approach and the business strategy approach are the best ways to build quality connections.
“Put yourself in a place where you can talk about your ideas, interests, job searches, goals, and people. Empathetic networking will help you find your way,” Allen stated.
According to Allen, innovation brings in different approaches to job searching. Any innovative approach needs to be more empathetic. “Once you know someone is looking for a job, reach out to them individually with the right offerings,” he reiterated.
“Be passionately engaged with your network and help as many individuals as you can.”
